SET Game Review

SET Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Highly addictive game because there are no turns, just every body whaling away at once.Trying to match up these shapes and colors becomes maddeningafter awhile. It is quite easy to get lost and see no matches what so everand all of a sudden your brain will just click and you will be seeing setseverywhere. This is a very simple game to learn and very hard to master. First time players will get frustrated very easily if they are playing withSET veterans. The idea is to match any three cards on the table by havingall of the card's characteristics beingall the same or all different.Your spatial reasoning will get a real work out as you play through thedeck the number of times equal to the number of players.Points are scoredfor each successful set and points are lost for incorrectly picking aset(which happens alot when everyone is in a hurry to find the next set.). A great great game that is loads of fun but a real mental workout.

If you have ever played the earlier version of life please do yourself a favor and avoid this "new" version like the blak plague. My friends and I used to play the old version every single day up to late hours. Once we learned the new version was out we ran and bought it. WHAT A DISAPOINTMENT!!!! Compared to the old version this one is HORRIBLE. It isn't fun. The new rules [are not good]. You can not bet anymore. Money isn't the way it used to be (what's with the litte pieces of carton?) Maybe if someone at MB reads this they will go back to the basics and bring back what was once a great and fun family game to play. Lucky for us we still have, and play with, our old and much better version of Life.

Wits And Wagers Review

Wits And Wagers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wits & Wagers is the trivia game that levels the playing field for those who can't abide trivia games. Even a child can play this and win. The skill comes more from making smart bets than answering correctly.

COMPONENTS

The game comes with a set of question cards that ask questions that even Jeopardy! players would find hard to know. (Such as "How many elevators operate within the Empire State Building?") The cards are nicely designed and sturdy. The answers come printed on the backs and include extra details to flesh out the interesting nature of the questions.

The players bet on a betting table board (fabric over a rubberized back in the first edition, felt in the second). The betting board contains aseries of odds that run from the middle at 1:1 to the ends at 4:1. Each players selects one of seven colors and receives two wooden bet markers painted in their color. Players then receive a dry-erase marker and a small dry-erase board framed in their color. They also receive ten red chips (worth 5 pts each) and three blue (10 pts). A 30-second sand timer limits stalling on answering questions or betting.

PLAY

A game consists of seven questions. A question with a numerical answer is read from the card and the timer set. Each player writes his answer on his dry-erase board. When time is called, the player's answers are placed on the betting board according to their spread; the response in the middle of all answers is placed at the center of the betting board at 1:1 with the rest spread in numerical order across the betting positions (with increasing odds against) on each side.

Players are then given 30 more seconds to bet once the answers are in place. They can bet on two answers up to 10 point chips total, tracking their bets with the bet markers. The answer is then read. The response on the betting board closest without going over is declared the winner.Chips are then doled out according to the odds to the players who won on that bet. All other bets are cleared form the table and go into the bank. The player who provided the winning response gets one additional blue chip.

The final question allows players to go all-in. After that final solution is read and chips doled out, the person with the most points in chips wins.

PROS:

* A unique approach to trivia games. The dual nature of the play (answering, betting) mixes things up.

* Anyone can win, even if he doesn't know all the answers. Good betting can compensate for bad responses.

* The questions are intriguing.

* Though the instruction booklet is daunting, the game play is simple.

* Up to seven people can play.

* A complete game can be played in only twenty minutes, allowing for multiple rounds.

* The game components are well-made.

* Plenty of question cards help maintain question freshness.

* Because the answers are all numerical, it makes it harder to remember answers in later game play should a familiar question arise (especially since many of the answers are minutia).

* Because of the betting aspect of the game, even responding with the correct answer from time to time may not guarantee a final win.

* When played at large parties, even non-players can get involved in the fun.

* Easy to learn and explain.

CONS:

* Can be slow the first time it's played (though familiarity brings the speed up considerably).

* The rules for spreading the answers across the board, especially if a couple players give the same response, can be tricky at first.

* The game does involvea Las Vegas style of wagering, and not every crowd may feel comfortable with the "gambling" aspect.

* The all-in final question has the tendency to negate good play on previous questions. (You may wish to alter this rule to set a limit on how much players can bet on the last question.)

People who have played this game with us enjoy it a great deal. Many people like trivia questions and some of these are just outlandishly hard. But that's the point. Most people aren't going to know these answers, and that's where the betting aspect heightens the fun.

While Wits & Wagers may not be the ultimate party game, it's got a lot going for it. Because of its two-pronged play, the game enables a wide variety of people to enjoy it. What more could one desire in a game?

Electronic Catch Phrase Review

Electronic Catch Phrase
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first played this game on the standard card version and had a blast playing it.The only flaw with it was that after you've played for a while, you might start remembering words you've seen before and the order in which they come.
So I bought the electronic version thinking it would be a simple improvement - more words in a random sequence. It's not that simple.
Pros:
- The size of the word list, and the fact that you can choose categories is a great addition.
- The portable design. You only have to carry around 1 unit, rather than a box with the unit, the cards, and the buzzer.
- Still the same great game.
Cons:
- The fact that there's no "off" switch hampers the portability.Since the game turns on if you press one of the buttons, if you just pack this in a bag, it can easily turn itself on, and start making that LOUD beeping sound. You need a screwdriver to remove the batteries, so that's not really an option either.
- There's no volume control and the default is very loud.
- Restrictive gameplay. The original card based game was pretty loose. You could split up into teams, or you could keep score in some other way.You could play up to a number, or you could keep playing until you got bored. The electronic version forces you to split into 2 teams and play up to 10 points. There's a voice calling out the score after each point, which is annoying. Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to reset the game- if you end in the middle of a game, it'll pick up in that game the next time you play, whether you want to or not.

I think the basic strengths of the game outweigh the problems with the electronic version, but if you're someone used to the offline version, don't assume that the electronic version is exactly the same.

This is a really cool game that I found at my local game store. I thought it would be like Blokus but it's different. What I like best is the scoring track is right on the board and the shapes are really unique. I've never seen shapes like this before and they fit together really well. You score points by making circles and stars. It looks really easy but it requires some careful planning. It's a great balance of luck and strategy. Everything is well made and the box is really eye-catching. This is a great family game!

Human Male Skull Replica Review

Human Male Skull Replica
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I mistakenly assumed that "more expensive means better", and that for its $100.00 asking price, this replica would be made from quality materials such as filled resin, "Polystone" or something similar. I'm aware that it's almost impossible to mimic what bone looks and feels like, but this replica is not even close; because it's plaster!
The photocopied pamphlet that came with the skull claims that it's made from a special casting stone. My experience tells me that the material used is no more than Hydrocal or Hydrostone at best; available at any art or craft supply shop (don't drop it because it will definitely shatter). Close inspection revealed positive bubbles in some recesses of the casting, a sign of poor and sloppy moldmaking.
To make matters more of a disappointment, the skull looked nothing like the image in the listing. It was not painted, tinted or colored in any way; it was just unfinished dull grayish plaster, not unlike the cheap plaster skulls you get for a few bucks at costume shops to decorate your lawn on Halloween. Definitely NOT "museum quality" nor does it have the "look and feel of bone" as the maker claims.
Needless to say, I returned it immediately.

Malarky An Imponderables Bluffing Game

I write this a bit tired from last night's party. We really laughed and played till we could play no more.Malarky is a fun game.Bluffing is fun, but bluffing questions to David Feldman's Imponderables books is hilarious.
OK, "Why are red lights arranged, Red, Yellow and Green"?"Why was Green designated as being GO?"
"Why do roosters crow in the morning"?
One person has the real answer, the rest must make up their answers. It is funny to see people try to make up answers that are so stupid it makes you laugh.
I thought the scoring was easy.
In any case, I thought I needed to write a review about the relatively obscure game because I think you'll have fun breaking it out at your next party.

Fundex Games Tip Of The Tongue Review

Oh man what fun!The best party games are those that are fast paced and involve everybody.Tip of the tongue is a game of trivia in which each person has only 2 seconds to answer the question.More often than not the questions are very easy although some are era specific so you'd have to be a baby boomer to know it.

Everyone takes turns being a questioner asking the trivia questions to the other players. As soon as the question is asked the questioner pushes a button and 2 seconds later the buzzer goes off.The fun is all in seeing whether or not you can quickly spout out the answer.

"A hard candy with a hole in the middle.""What color are the Simpsons?""What is the Japanese currency?"These are just a few examples of what you may have.I only hope there are refills for the trivia cards because I'm sure we will run through these cards soon as fun as this game is.

Clue Review

Clue
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a Clue collector, I was delighted to see a new game coming to the market.Too bad it turned out the way it did. While the classic Clue editions each had their charms, this game merely feels like an annoying high school kid dying to be popular. The idea of making a modern edition of the classic game is admirable. But the people at Hasbro tried way too hard.

Making Mustard a football player?Mrs. White being a child star? The designer of this game spent too much time watching reality tv.With weapons like a dumbbell and an Oscar trophy, this edition is very obviously trying to cater to all those Hollywood stereotypes.Perhaps the strangest improvement is that each suspect now has a special power that can be used once during a game.In my opinion, it does not truly improve game play.

As for the pieces themselves... the weapons are very nicely made of solid metal. The pawns are simply plastic rectangles with a "?" displayed in the middle and a colored base. They look very cheap. But the cards are the most disappointing aspect of the whole game. While using real pictures for suspects isn't a bad idea, taking pictures that look like they came from a bad retail catalog does.Mrs. White's picture is especially bad.She looks like she has an itch on her nose.

Overall, the game is durable, but only because you won't want to play it much.I gave it some educational value because, like the original Clue, people do learn to think more strategically by using deducting skills. As for the story and game play... I would recommend sticking to the classic clue games.

Cranium Puzzles Plus Seek & Find - Let's Go to the City Review

Cranium Puzzles Plus Seek & Find - Let's Go to the City
Average Reviews:

My almost-4-year-old daughter received this as a gift and she and her 2-year-old brother love it. They have always enjoyed putting puzzles together, but they were thrilled to find out that with this one, the fun doesn't end when you finish the puzzle. The toy comes with two sets of cards--beginner and advanced. The beginner cards ask the player to "find something pink" or "find 2 boats" in the puzzle and then circle them with a dry erase marker. The advanced cards ask the same types of things, but the numbers of things are higher and harder to find: "find 9 squirrels." I like that the cards show the numeral and the picture or color, so reading the cards is not an issue for the preschool player.

What's Yours Like The Game That Tells It Like It Is.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for something new and came across this great game. The name is a bit odd but the game itself is so much fun. The answers my family comes up with are a riot. Like describing your toilet! We all try to come up with creative and sometimes vague answers to throw the person guessing off. It's so much fun!

The pros and cons are:

Pros-
It gets you thinking creatively.
Helps you get to know the other players better.
Fun for any age

Cons-
The point system is somewhat confusing
The guessing system could be perfected
Doesn't come with a white board eraser

These things could be changed easily. They don't really affect the game play.

I'd recommend this game to anyone.

Risk Review

Risk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to hate Risk. A couple of my friends back in high school tried to get me to play a few times and I absolutely hated it. Seriously... playing with little tiny men, cannons, and horses; rolling dice to take over the world? NO thanks! But a funny thing happened. Fast forward 20 years and someone breaks out Risk at a small gathering. Begrudgingly I accept the offer to play, and wonder of wonders, I had a great time! After that night, a small group of Risk fans began to gather once a week to play Risk together. During one of our sessions, we discovered some rule variations in the back of the instruction manual, things like "Commander Roll" and "Capital Conquest" mode. We incorporated these rules and a few others and Risk only got better!

We were all quite excited when we recently saw a commercial on TV for a new version of Risk. It had a fresh new look to it and had new rules for playing that promised to speed up the game. So I bought it. Some of the new rules are the same as the rule variations from original Risk. The new guide book doesn't mention anything about "Commander Roll" but it does have new objectives and a very unique reward system that compliments the objectives. Rewards range from an extra attack dice, extra defense dice, an airfield, a guaranteed country card at the end of your turn, extra strategic maneuver at the end of your turn, and my personal favorite, an extra strategic maneuver at the START of your turn (can you say surprise attack!?).

Visually, the new game board is dramatic. Everything is a little darker but very bold. Gone are thesoothing blue oceans and seas. They're now blood red with subtle stripes radiating from the bottom corner. Most of the countries have remained the same but a few names have changed. There also appears to be a few extra land bridges connecting some territories, which is helpful (unless you reside in that territory!). The playing pieces have changed. Gone are the diminutive soldiers, cannons, and horses. They are replaced with simple flat arrows, a short one indicating one troop and a longer one with three stripes on it indicating, that's right- three troops. They're roughly the same color as earlier versions of Risk but they are a lot harder to pluck up off the board during skirmishes and I don't think there's enough of a difference between the two arrows. This new version of Risk also has cities that are randomly placed about the board at the start of the game. If you control a territory with a city in it, you get to add a "+1" to your territory count before you divide by 3 to see how many troops you draft at the start of your turn.

Another change I really like is the country cards you receive at the end of your turn (if you defeated a neighboring territory). They no longer have soldiers, horses, or cannons on them. Instead they have either one or two stars. When you have at least two stars you can turn them in for troops. You can also collect as many cards as you want and turn in a larger number of stars for exponentially more troops. (2-stars=2 troops, 3-stars=4 troops, 4-stars=7 troops, etc).

There's a few other minor differences, but overall we all loved the new and improved Risk. I can't say that the game went any faster. It still took 4 of us over 2 hours to finish a game. Granted it was our first time playing this version and it will probably go faster next time. I think that next time we'll add some of our older rules to the mix which will help speed things up. Here's one of our favorites--the Country Card Re-Roll: when you receive a country card for winning a territory, if you later attack the country on the back of one of your country cards, you are allowed to re-roll one of your attack dice on each roll. It doesn't work when defending, but it can really help you overcome the defender advantage. And in case you don't have original Risk and have never heard of the Commander Roll, you must try it at least once! Once PER TURN (not per attack) you are allowed to change one of your attack dice to a six. This is kinda symbolic of your commander being present at that particular battle and helping deliver a more decisive defeat. It's great when you just wanna pop over to a neighboring continent and take one of your opponent's territory so they don't get the continent bonus at the beginning of their turn!

For more info on this new version of Risk, be sure to click on the "Watch it in action" link at the top of this page to see a great Flash overview.

UPDATE: Having played this new version of Risk many times since I wrote this review, I have to say I'm still a big fan! The game does go a lot faster (especially using our rule variations described above) and it's a lot more fun. Still don't like the little arrow pieces presenting soldiers. We still pull out an old version of Risk and use the soldiers, horses, and cannons from it. Parker Brothers: please change the army pieces!

My 5 year old son likes to play this game with me.It is an active game which is especially good for boys. The DVD has one problem. They didn't do a good job recording the sound so the man starts talking at the begining of each game and his 1st word is not spoken but you can see his mouth move. It's something like "Let's get started" but it ends up being "get started".You would think they would fix that problem before putting the same DVD into new versions of the game but they didn't.It is still fun and we are on our 2nd game since the DVD broke in the 1st game and the company doesn't have replacement parts you can buy separately.

Trivial Pursuit Team Review

Trivial Pursuit Team
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the worst game I have ever bought.I will start by saying that I have always been a huge trivial pursuit fan.Every year at Christmas my family and I sit around in the evenings and play TP.After the last release of TP which I thought was an ingenious twist (having six different difficulty levels) I was excited to see what the makers of TP had come up with this year. What I found was a total rip off.The number one problem with this game is that it CAN ONLY BE PLAYED TWELVE TIMES PERIOD (unless you like asking the same question twice) and each game that you play is short we finished the whole game in 5 hours of play. The second problem is that the game is chalked full of errors.Including: the last supper was not painted by DaVinci (which it was) and that Bach was born in 1865 (actually 1685). The premise of this game is a good one, having several different types of questions but this was a poor execution. This is a clear example of what happens when a company tries to churn out new versions of a game each year to make a quick buck. Also the questions in this version are very easy. This new version is clearly aimed at bringing in the are you smarter than a fourth grader sect of America. Not what I had come to expect from Hasbro.

Sincerely,
Disappointed in NC.
