(More customer reviews)Wits & Wagers is the trivia game that levels the playing field for those who can't abide trivia games. Even a child can play this and win. The skill comes more from making smart bets than answering correctly.

COMPONENTS

The game comes with a set of question cards that ask questions that even Jeopardy! players would find hard to know. (Such as "How many elevators operate within the Empire State Building?") The cards are nicely designed and sturdy. The answers come printed on the backs and include extra details to flesh out the interesting nature of the questions.

The players bet on a betting table board (fabric over a rubberized back in the first edition, felt in the second). The betting board contains aseries of odds that run from the middle at 1:1 to the ends at 4:1. Each players selects one of seven colors and receives two wooden bet markers painted in their color. Players then receive a dry-erase marker and a small dry-erase board framed in their color. They also receive ten red chips (worth 5 pts each) and three blue (10 pts). A 30-second sand timer limits stalling on answering questions or betting.

PLAY

A game consists of seven questions. A question with a numerical answer is read from the card and the timer set. Each player writes his answer on his dry-erase board. When time is called, the player's answers are placed on the betting board according to their spread; the response in the middle of all answers is placed at the center of the betting board at 1:1 with the rest spread in numerical order across the betting positions (with increasing odds against) on each side.

Players are then given 30 more seconds to bet once the answers are in place. They can bet on two answers up to 10 point chips total, tracking their bets with the bet markers. The answer is then read. The response on the betting board closest without going over is declared the winner.Chips are then doled out according to the odds to the players who won on that bet. All other bets are cleared form the table and go into the bank. The player who provided the winning response gets one additional blue chip.

The final question allows players to go all-in. After that final solution is read and chips doled out, the person with the most points in chips wins.

PROS:

* A unique approach to trivia games. The dual nature of the play (answering, betting) mixes things up.

* Anyone can win, even if he doesn't know all the answers. Good betting can compensate for bad responses.

* The questions are intriguing.

* Though the instruction booklet is daunting, the game play is simple.

* Up to seven people can play.

* A complete game can be played in only twenty minutes, allowing for multiple rounds.

* The game components are well-made.

* Plenty of question cards help maintain question freshness.

* Because the answers are all numerical, it makes it harder to remember answers in later game play should a familiar question arise (especially since many of the answers are minutia).

* Because of the betting aspect of the game, even responding with the correct answer from time to time may not guarantee a final win.

* When played at large parties, even non-players can get involved in the fun.

* Easy to learn and explain.

CONS:

* Can be slow the first time it's played (though familiarity brings the speed up considerably).

* The rules for spreading the answers across the board, especially if a couple players give the same response, can be tricky at first.

* The game does involvea Las Vegas style of wagering, and not every crowd may feel comfortable with the "gambling" aspect.

* The all-in final question has the tendency to negate good play on previous questions. (You may wish to alter this rule to set a limit on how much players can bet on the last question.)

People who have played this game with us enjoy it a great deal. Many people like trivia questions and some of these are just outlandishly hard. But that's the point. Most people aren't going to know these answers, and that's where the betting aspect heightens the fun.

While Wits & Wagers may not be the ultimate party game, it's got a lot going for it. Because of its two-pronged play, the game enables a wide variety of people to enjoy it. What more could one desire in a game?

Electronic Catch Phrase Review

(More customer reviews)I first played this game on the standard card version and had a blast playing it.The only flaw with it was that after you've played for a while, you might start remembering words you've seen before and the order in which they come.
So I bought the electronic version thinking it would be a simple improvement - more words in a random sequence.It's not that simple.
Pros:
- The size of the word list, and the fact that you can choose categories is a great addition.
- The portable design. You only have to carry around 1 unit, rather than a box with the unit, the cards, and the buzzer.
- Still the same great game.
Cons:
- The fact that there's no "off" switch hampers the portability.Since the game turns on if you press one of the buttons, if you just pack this in a bag, it can easily turn itself on, and start making that LOUD beeping sound.You need a screwdriver to remove the batteries, so that's not really an option either.
- There's no volume control and the default is very loud.
- Restrictive gameplay.The original card based game was pretty loose. You could split up into teams, or you could keep score in some other way.You could play up to a number, or you could keep playing until you got bored. The electronic version forces you to split into 2 teams and play up to 10 points.There's a voice calling out the score after each point, which is annoying.Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to reset the game- if you end in the middle of a game, it'll pick up in that game the next time you play, whether you want to or not.

I think the basic strengths of the game outweigh the problems with the electronic version, but if you're someone used to the offline version, don't assume that the electronic version is exactly the same.

Like describing your toilet! We all try to come up with creative and sometimes vague answers to throw the person guessing off. It's so much fun!

The pros and cons are:

Pros-
It gets you thinking creatively.
Helps you get to know the other players better.
Fun for any age

Cons-
The point system is somewhat confusing
The guessing system could be perfected
Doesn't come with a white board eraser

These things could be changed easily. They don't really affect the game play.

I'd recommend this game to anyone.

(More customer reviews)Both of my 5 year old boys got a Jenga game for Christmas this past year.One got this set and the other got the set that just comes in a box.This is definitely way better because the blocks can be put away nicely in this canister.The box for the other one is flimsy & we've taped it repeatedly already.

As for the game, it's fun & really easy to learn.All of us like it.Every family should have this.None of us are experts yet, but it doesn't matter.The boys like it just as well when the whole tower falls down.

Definitely a good gift for ages 5+.ALL ages would enjoy this.

I would recommend playing it with either 4 or 6 people, and following the rules (which are incredibly simple).This game would be fun for any age range-- my friends and I are all in our 20s, but this could be fun regardless of age.

The Big Taboo Review

(More customer reviews)I have to say I was psyched to get this game as I love the original taboo, always wondered why they havent really pumped out new editions, and thought the description of the new varieties of games in The Big Taboo sounded very intriguing. Alas, I brought this over to my cousin's house the other night - we all love our board games - and it was pretty much a bomb. I liked it more than most but I'm not sure if that's because I paid money for it or not.

let me first state the positive - Classic Taboo is still as fun as ever, though pressing the buzzer when someone uses a Taboo word is infinitely more fulfilling than pressing Bendy Bob's (more on that unfortunate addition later) lame, tinny squeaker. The 15 words version of the game is pretty fun - though I wish the instructions were more clear on how strict one should be about what counts as a word (we decided to be generous and not count 'Ums' 'Yes'es or repeated words as additional words).

Now for the negatives:

Unfortunately Bendy Bob was probably the biggest disappointment. I so wanted to love the little guy cuz he's cute and creative, but the fact of the matter is it was very tough to manipulate him at all, let alone trying to move him in such a way to get people to guess what were way too complicated phrases. Truth be told, I actually kinda enjoyed the difficulty of Bendy Bob and people's pathetic attempts to move Bob around certainly induced a fair amount of laughter among the group, but my fondness for Bob put me in the distinct minority. Most people hated him, and wanted to rip his flexible arms and legs off, limb by limb. I think the whole problem with Bob could have been solved by just making the phrases simpler - (ie instead of 'chewing gum', the phrase should have just been 'chewing'). Landing on a Bendy Bob space was good for one, maybe two spaces forward maximum while the others generally got your 4 or more.

Other negatives:
The 'pictionary' version of the game was OK I guess but we've seen this so many times in games it just didn't do much for the group.

There was another game in there that was partly a memory game using already played cards, but it was pretty lame and just felt tacked on.

The time limit of the various games seemed kinda arbitrary as we thought some games that used two minutes would have been fine with one, and vice versa.

In general the gameplay was just a bit too complicated, as it took me about as long to read the rules as it did to play the game.

The ending in fact was a big, anti-climatic disappointment (though the game was so ho-hum I can't even imagine how good the ending would have had to be to register an actual climax) as the goal was just to get to the end. There was no final challenge, which most board gamers have come to expect. Come on people, we've outgrown Chutes and Ladders.

I really appreciate the effort of the game makers to take the Taboo game and give it a bunch of new twists, but the sad fact is that most of them (with the possible exception of 15 Words) just weren't executed well. I have a feeling they really didnt do much live testing. And aside from the classic version, the whole 'Taboo' aspect of the game was missing. Sometimes, you just can't top the original. I may give this one more try, but I can't see myself playing this game much more often. I ought to just give Bendy Bob to my 3-year-old cousin and let her do with it what she wants.

We purchased this game a year ago and it has been so well-received by the people we play it with that now many of those same people own it themselves. What higher praise can you give to a game that you play it and then want to own it yourself?

The play of Apples to Apples could not be easier. It contains nothing more than two sets of cards. Each green card has an adjective or description on it (like "Awful," "Scary," or "Scintillating")while red cards have nouns (like "Waterfalls," "The CIA," "George Washington," or "Mad Cow Disease.") Each person gets a set of red cards and each will be a judge in turn for the winning answer. The judge turns over a green card and players must play a red card from their hand that they believe will line up with the word on the green card or will appeal to that round's judge. Table talk is encouraged and makes the game more fun. The judge then decides which red card best fits the green card and the one who played the winning red card wins the round. It's that simple.

The fact that everyone gets to not only play, but also judge, makes the game unpredictable. Some judges will look for the most logical match, while others may go for the absurd pairing. You can also add some other tricks, too, that enliven the game. If you have six or more people playing, you can play so that the last person to play a red card has to take his back and sit out the round--makes for quick thinking and crazy answers.

We've never had a single person ever dislike this game and it is the one we reach for over Cranium, Taboo, Balderdash, and all the other party games like them. For its cleverness and simple play, Apples to Apples has won numerous awards, including Games Magazine's Top 100 Games award and a special citation from Mensa.

This edition is loaded with cards and has virtually unlimited gameplay. It's the best deal for the money. It is hard to tell if this version is the one that includes the wooden box (once called "The Crate Edition"), but that nice, woodburned box is truly wonderful to have and makes the game seem even more special.

Purchasing this game is a true no-brainer. It's fun for a wide variety of ages and number of players, takes no time to learn, and always plays differently from one match to the next. And it's a hoot! If there is any con, it's that the cards can get a little manhandled over time since they are not fully laminated, but that's not enough to diminish the joy this game brings.

A can't miss game and worth every penny.

(More customer reviews)Balderdash is a great game that combines wordsmithing and bluffing. To begin, each player rolls the dice to determine who will be the dasher first. The dasher then draws a card, reads the balderdash word to the players, and spells the word. None of these words are ones used in everyday language. (Examples include fleer, runnel, pontage, etc.) Each player jots down a phony definition that sounds credible (or, if you happen to know the real definition, write it down instead), and gives the slip of paper to the dasher. And then the hilarity begins. The dasher must attempt to read each definition and the real one without showing any emotion ... which is much more difficult than it sounds! Some of the phony definitions are hilarious, and often the real definition is too. After all definitions have been read, the dasher asks each player which definition is the correct one, noting that player's choice on the slip of paper. At the conclusion of the round, the players who chose the correct definition move two spaces on the board. The players who received votes for their phony definitions move one space for every vote. And, if no player guesses the correct definition, the dasher moves forward three spaces on the board. For subsequent rounds, each player takes a turn as the dasher. This game is fun, educational, and incredibly hilarious. Someone will crack up with laughter in every round!

(More customer reviews)Based on wonderful family memories of playing classic Pictionary, I asked for this for my birthday.Unfortunately, they've messed with it.The items they've chosen for drawing have clearly not been vetted.The example I'm thinking of is "Windows XP."Who can draw that without writing "XP"?Items like that are also going to be dated very quickly.

The final square on the classic board is an all-play, which gives other teams a last chance to take game play away from the leaders.On this board, the leading team can win without a final face-off.I'm disappointed in the lack of consideration that was given to "updating" this game.I just bought a copy of the classic game and will be getting rid of this version.

(More customer reviews)I can't believe this game doesn't have more reviews or isn't more popular.I've had the pleasure of playing Super Showdown several times in small groups of parents with their kids... and this Thanksgiving I played it with just adults and every time it's been a smash hit generating lots and lots of laughter

Apparently it's a lot like "Apples to Apples" which I've never played.

Basically, there's a contest at stake - like "who would best win a snowball fight" or "could stay the longest in a haunted house."First you select from a bunch of fictional characters and archetypes, such as Harry Potter, or A Grandma.Then you add a "Twist" like "After 1 month of practice" or "With a time machine."And then you all argue your case before one player who sits out who acts as the judge.You need to come up with reasons why, for example "Prince Charming with the ability to run faster than a speeding bullet" would beat "Dora The Explorer with a Shopping Cart" at a scavenger hunt.

What's great is that even though the situations and characters are kid-like, you can still make very reasonable, impassioned and hilarious arguments; the childish nature of the subjects just adds to the silliness.

If you've got smart verbal friends, hilarity will ensue!And kids will come up with surprising and silly reasons as well.The designation on the box says 8 and up, and that proved to be true.Also, there's an element in the game that lessens the competition a bit and allows/forces 2 people to wind up arguing for the same combo - this is a great aspect too; these unexpected alliances add to the fun factor and keep feelings from getting too hurt.

One tip - consider setting some parameters on the argument stage, or it could drag on.

This is not a game for 12 year olds, I would strongly recommend it for people over 18, however. I love that it can be played in only a half hour, I want to scream when other trivia games go over the two hour mark. I thought many of the trivia questions were clever. Bottom line, of the group of four of us, everyone thought this game was awesome.

Scattergories Review

(More customer reviews)If you love Scattergories, you're sure to be disappointed by all the corners cut to bring you the latest version of this game.

Rather than adding further comments about how fun, enjoyable, and entertaining the game concept itself is, I feel the need to point out some of the "features" of the new game packaging and setup that I was so upset about with my recent purchase. For some reason, even though the game's price is at least as high as it has always been (if not higher!) the quality of the game is much lower now. The "folders" where you slide in your list and answer sheets are of quite poor quality--they are now made of a very thin cardboard into which you slide a plastic strip and then fold the corrugated spine into place. I can't imagine that this game will last more than about a year, if that, before it is really beat up and potentially torn up. The lists are tiny, harder to read, and far more flimsy than in previous editions. Even if you're a fan of the new layout (clipping the list and answer sheet into place rather than using a pad and slipping the list behind it), the new folders are less user friendly than the original versions, especially for those with less dexterity, such as kids and older adults. In addition, I agree with a previous reviewer about the ridiculousness of the current battery setup in the buzzer; his review outlines the details of that issue quite nicely.

I could go on, but rather than continuing this rant, I will simply add a final note to all fellow Scattergories fans: BEWARE. If you, like me, have not "updated" your game in years, I highly recommend keeping what you've got and not wasting thirty bucks. What a letdown...

Unlike others that focus on your knowledge of the obscure, this game gives you a fun clue... iPod, Madonna, Napoleon Dynamite, and let's you choose the activity that you'll perform to get your teammates to guess. The rub is that the other team gets to rank the activities against different point values. If the clue is Madonna, they might offer you 1 point to hum or 5 points to sculpt with clay.

We played this with friends after a dinner party for 3 hours... By the time we were done, our bodies hurt from hysterical laughing (and a few antics). If you love pop culture or if you love Cranium, this is a fantastic game.
