(More customer reviews)Do you like Scrabble but get hung up trying to use those special point squares, are bummed when someone "steals your spot", or dragged down by Debbie Dictionary ("just let me look up this one word") or Slow Joe (who takes 20 minutes for each turn)?Well you would love Bananagrams, because it solves those problems.There are no special squares (or squares at all), no points on the letters (all are worth the same) and no time to dawdle.You are instead rewarded for speed and flexibility in making your own crossword.You can completely pull apart your crossword and start from scratch if you need to or just swap out a letter here and there, but don't get caught with a bunch of spare letters when an opponent goes out!

It is exciting and challenging to play this game with adults, but it can be fun to include the kids.You can easily adapt the rules to suit yourself.We "handicap" the adults by drawing two tiles for every one the kids draw.You can play solitaire or have several players.

A similar game that I also love is Learning Resources' "Take Four".If you are the type who would prefer to have a grid to keep those tiles straight, or likes to have a few "jokers" thrown in, you might prefer this.But Banagrams is far more portable and much cheaper.I like both of these games so much (as well as the spelling card games Quiddler, My Word, and Tri-Virsity) that the old Scrabble board is gathering dust.

However, it's important to note that the game is played by allplayers SIMULTANEOUSLY - which does get the pace picked up quite a bit.You have to be pretty quick in "slamming" a card down to create your new word while the other players are all trying to do the same thing. Thus the four-letter word is ever-changing. I saw the commercial for this game on TV and being from a family that loves games about to head out on a family vacation, went to Target where I saw it for about $5. We played it with four adults, three adults and two adults and during each of those scenarios, had a blast. It was fun trying to stump each other with rare four-letter words. My mom has recommended it to several of her friends who have grandchildren. It's a great game for kids learning to spell and to challenge their word skills. Warning: After several rounds of this game, you'll find yourself on the lookout for four-letter words all the time!

(More customer reviews)Monopoly is fun, but it takes FOREVER to play, those trivia games are too hard for the kids, Dad can't even draw a stick figure, let alone play Pictionary, and you don't want to spend an hour just setting up an elaborate game and reading the instructions.
So what's the solution?Play QUIDDLER!!Our family loves this game - you can complete a whole game in an hour or less (or you could stop half-way through and finish the game the next evening).In Quiddler, you create words, but unlike Scrabble, it's not always the one with the best vocabulary who gets the most points.You try to make words out of all your letters - there might be a long word which gets lots of points, but it might be little brother over there who is able to make several short words who gets the "most words" bonus and jumps ahead of everyone else!
We played this game last night and were surprised how fast things change - someone who is way ahead after the 3rd round can be behind after the 4th.Just one round can dramatically change things!
Pick a dictionary and let that be your judge on whether or not something is a word.Be sure to find the dictionary BEFORE you start playing because you'll need it!
We've played this game with 4, 5, and 6 people.Anywhere from 1 to 8 people can play -now that's a versatile game!
This is one game where a child isn't necessarily at a disadvantage when playing with adults.
